Consumer unit enclosures within about 400m of the seafront - Marine Drive, the Old Town, most of Cliftonville from the Lido to Palm Bay - fall under BS 7671's external-influences classification AF3 (medium risk of significant corrosive substances). Standard steel doors on plastic enclosures rust at the hinge inside three to five years. RCBOs seize. Contact surfaces on breakers oxidise, causing nuisance tripping that gets blamed on the appliance.
Coastal spec adds a gasketed IP65 enclosure (typically a Wylex or Hager marine-rated board), stainless-face RCBOs where the module supports it, and marine-grade cable glands on the tails. It's about GBP 80-120 more than the standard spec and lasts twice as long. On seafront jobs I quote this as default. Two streets back from the front you can go standard.
Amendment 2:2022 (in force from 27 September 2022 for new installations) requires SPDs on all domestic circuits where transient overvoltage could cause serious injury or damage. In practice that's almost every domestic install. Type 2 SPDs at the origin (in the CU) catch surges from lightning and grid switching. Thanet gets more onshore-storm transients than average, and modern electronics - solar inverters, EV chargers, boiler controls, heat pumps - are far more sensitive to spikes than the wiring they sit on. Fitting an SPD adds about GBP 45 to the parts bill and is standard on every board I fit.
RCDs cover multiple circuits with one device. If one circuit trips, everything on that RCD goes dark - including the fridge freezer, the alarm, the router. RCBOs cover one circuit each: only that circuit trips, everything else stays on. Amendment 2 makes RCBO-per-circuit the default because it's safer and more diagnostic. It costs about GBP 150-250 more than a split-load RCD board on a typical 10-circuit house. I don't recommend RCDs on new installs.
Consumer unit replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. You have three routes: (1) self-certification by a registered installer via a competent-person scheme, which is what I do - fastest, no council fee; (2) building notice with Thanet District Council building control before starting, roughly GBP 250-350 in fees and slower; (3) full plans deposit, rare for domestic CU work. My competent-person route means TDC get notified automatically, you get a certificate to your address inside 30 days, and there's no additional council charge on your quote.
A standard CU upgrade is a one-day job. Power is off for six to eight hours in the middle - I fit the board, run the tests, then reinstate. You don't need to vacate. Fridge/freezer contents stay fine if the door's kept shut. I do these Mon-Sat, and can work around fixed appointments (school run, deliveries) if you say so at booking.
I won't install a new CU on top of unsafe legacy wiring. If the existing installation has widespread deterioration - cracked insulation, undersized earth paths, no CPC on lighting circuits - that's an EICR/remedial situation first, then the CU. Otherwise the new board just makes hidden problems trip constantly and you get told the new board is faulty. I'll do a 20-minute walk-round test before quoting and be honest with you.
